Hibiscus is a plant species of the genus Marshmallow that belongs to the Malvaceae family.

Hibiscus contains 15-30% of organic acids, including citric acid, malic acid, and tartaric acid. It also contains acidic polysaccharides that give it its dark red color.

It is grown in Sudan and is known as karkade, and is grown in several areas including: Merowe – Dongola – Khartoum suburbs – Kosti – Shendi – Al-Jazirah – Al-Rahad.

Uses of Hibiscus:
A soothing, moisturizing and refreshing drink, aids digestion, diuretic and mild laxative, reduces high blood pressure (when drunk cold or warm), making sweets (jelly and jams), anti-scurvy, useful in treating fevers, increasing lymphocytes and white blood cells, a source of organic acids and vitamin C, the seeds are used as animal feed (22% protein), cosmetics, extracting natural dyes (anthocyanins), increasing blood circulation and strengthening the heart, as an ornamental plant in gardens.
